In Arianople, City of Cities, being born on the wrong street is bad enough, but being born in the slums, the Gutter Streets, is even worse. Quintefoil Morehap knows more about that district than any young lady of fashion should, but she has found a way to escape her birth: she just needs to maintain her masquerade.
When Quin meets her intended mark, the formidable Fehrim Pasha, she finds herself embroiled in a dangerous game in which her carefully-crafted persona is threatened. The situation only becomes more complicated when Fehr is framed for the assassination of his cousin, the Sultana. Quin must prove his innocence and solve the murder without her own crimes being exposed. The question is, can she succeed before the hangman’s rope claims a new victim?
Meanwhile, the Gutter Streets are plagued by a series of horrific murders. When the next victim proves to be too close to home, Quin cannot help but be drawn in. She must discover the connection between the assassination and this mysterious and cruel hand before it strikes again, but even she could never imagine where the trail of blood will lead her…
